Conditions bad. Outbreak of Typhus caused by lice and spinal meningitis. Some of boys dying. Extra drive to keep clean.
20th January
No school here, must do more PT.
24th January
Doing more PT and looking quite fit now.
26th January
Put in quarantine today, one of chaps in the hut got Typhus.
A fortnight later, things seemed to be looking up for George â for a little while, at least. He emerged from quarantine uninfected. He received his first news from home, confirming that everyone there was well, including his sisterâs newly born son, who had been named George after his âmissingâ uncle. He was given new boots at last, albeit not the right size. And he picked up some snippets of news about the progress of the War.
